Add the course calendar to your calendar app
Every class meeting and due date for your section is published as a calendar feed. Subscribe once and your calendar app keeps it current: when a date or a link changes on the schedule, your calendar changes too.
Pick your section and the feed you want:
| Section | Everything: class meetings and deadlines | Deadlines only |
|---|---|---|
| Monday/Wednesday (Brian Yurk) | Google Calendar · Apple Calendar or Outlook · download | Google Calendar · Apple Calendar or Outlook · download |
| Tuesday/Thursday (Catie Welsh) | Google Calendar · Apple Calendar or Outlook · download | Google Calendar · Apple Calendar or Outlook · download |
Feed addresses, for an app that asks for a URL:
- Monday/Wednesday, everything: https://math.hope.edu/yurk/295/calendar/csci295-mw.ics
- Monday/Wednesday, deadlines only: https://math.hope.edu/yurk/295/calendar/csci295-mw-deadlines.ics
- Tuesday/Thursday, everything: https://math.hope.edu/yurk/295/calendar/csci295-tr.ics
- Tuesday/Thursday, deadlines only: https://math.hope.edu/yurk/295/calendar/csci295-tr-deadlines.ics
Everything has each class meeting, with that day’s materials and what is due at the start of class; every deadline; the days your section has no class; the college’s drop/add and withdraw deadlines; and the final exam period. Deadlines only leaves out the class meetings, for when you already have them in your calendar.
Google Calendar
Subscribe (recommended). Use the Google Calendar link for your section above and choose Add. To do it by hand: open Google Calendar on a computer, click + next to Other calendars, choose From URL, paste your section’s feed address, and click Add calendar. Use the Google account whose calendar you actually check.
The course calendar then appears under Other calendars and in the Google Calendar app on your phone. If it does not show up on your phone, find it in the app’s settings and turn it on.
Google checks subscribed calendars for changes about once a day, so an update can take a day to reach you. The schedule page always has the current version.
Apple Calendar
iPhone or iPad: tap the Apple Calendar or Outlook link for your section and choose Subscribe.
Mac: click the same link, or in Calendar choose File › New Calendar Subscription, paste the feed address, and click Subscribe. Set Auto-refresh to every hour or every day. Choose iCloud as the location if you want it on your other Apple devices too.
Outlook
Click the Apple Calendar or Outlook link for your section. In Outlook on the web, you can also choose Add calendar › Subscribe from web and paste the feed address.
Importing a copy instead
The download links give you an .ics file you can import once (in Google Calendar: Settings › Import & export › Import). An imported copy does not update when the schedule changes. If you import anyway, first create a separate calendar named for the course and import into it, so you can delete it and import a fresh copy later without duplicates.
Reminders
Each deadline in the feed carries a reminder one day ahead. Not every app uses it. Google Calendar ignores the reminders in a subscribed feed, but you can set your own default notifications in the settings for the course calendar. When subscribing on a Mac, clear the option to remove alerts if you want them.
If something looks wrong
The schedule page is the authority. If your calendar and the schedule page disagree, go by the schedule page, and let your instructor know.
