Statistics: Chapter 2

Today we will look at the material in Chapter 2: Exploring Data with Graphs and Numerical Summaries.  We will discuss how to organize data using graphs (histograms, time plots, stemplots, pie charts, bar graphs).  We will also look at mean and median and how those two numbers differ when distributions are skewed.  We will see how numbers are used to describe the spread of a distribution.  In particular we will look at range and standard deviation.  We will also see how position can be used to describe the spread through using quartiles.  Finally, we will take a quick look at how descriptive statistics can be misused.
